Secluded, Small-town Pine Island Homes for Sale
The biggest appeal of living on Pine Island is definitely the slower pace of life befitting a tropical island. The island is, for the most part, zoned as rural and produces exotic fruit such as lychee and mangoes that many travel for miles to get their hands on. The majority of the Pine Island homes for sale are concentrated within St. James City, the community that is comfortably nestled on Pine Island's southern edge.
The island also contains a number of other cities as well, including Bokeelia, on its northern tip; Pineland; and Pine Island Center, which contains the island's only large grocery store, elementary school and library. Matlacha is often roped in with the other island communities but it actually stands on its own island, connected by a bridge to both Pine Island and the mainland.
Surreal Pine Island, Florida Real Estate: Surrounded in Natural Wonders
In contrast to many of the other coastal islands, Pine Island is made up of the same coral rock as the mainland, due to its guarded position within a ring of barrier islands. Pine Island, Florida real estate does, of course, offer an easy proximity to many of southwest Florida's renowned beaches such as those found on Sanibel Island.
The area has the unique distinction of being so close to a major metro center (Greater Fort Myers/Cape Coral) while maintaining the feeling of a remote tropical getaway. The major, big city amenities of Cape Coral are located just a few minutes away but the island's rural sensibilities and the number of nature preserves serve to shield the island from those influences. The surrounding nature preserves include the Pine Island National Wildlife Refuge, Little Pine Island and Matlacha Pass National Wildlife Refuge.
