A Remote, Tropical Getaway with Captiva Real Estate

Allegedly, the name of the island came from the Pirate Captain Jose Gaspar who reportedly held female prisoners on the island during the golden age of Caribbean piracy. These are mere rumors; however, the island has been a home to several fascinating residents, captivated by the island's singular beauty.

The island's first resident (and for a time only resident) was an Austrian man named Binder who became shipwrecked after the freighter he was on, bound for New Orleans, crashed near Boca Grande. He made it home but would ultimately return to homestead on the island in 1888, becoming the only owner of Captiva real estate for the next ten years. Other notable residents include Charles Lindbergh and Theodore Roosevelt.
